Make Every Day Earth Day; Alter Eco

We believe that every day should be Earth Day. That’s why this week we are shining light on people and organizations that are helping to save our planet all year round. Today we recognize Alter Eco, an alternative trading organization that specializes in the import and distribution of organic, non-GMO, and Fair Trade products.

Founded in 1998 by Tristan Lecomte, Alter Eco’s mission is “global transformation through ethical relationships with small-scale farmers and an integral sustainability orientation at every point in the supply chain.” Alter Eco works to make life better all over the globe by working directly with farmers to institute Organic and Fair Trade practices. As a Carbon Negative business, Alter Eco offsets more carbon than they emit!

All Alter Eco products are USDA Certified Organic, Fair Trade Certified, Carbon Neutral Certified, Non-GMO Project Verified and Certified Gluten-Free. Their primary products include Swiss chocolate, Bolivian quinoa, Thai rice, and Mascobado cane sugar.

“Recognized as a top certified Benefit Corporation and one of the first registered Public Benefit Corporations, Alter Eco is dedicated to full-circle sustainability throughout its operations and supply chain through four pillars: sourcing using Fair Trade principles, producing of only organic and non-GMO foods, creating minimal waste by working towards 100 percent compostable packaging, and in-setting carbon emissions by means of large-scale reforestation programs in the cooperatives that produce its crops. These principals are entwined with Alter Eco’s commitment to the highest quality ingredients and taste in all its products.” – Alter Eco

Alter Eco offers only organic, fair trade, non-GMO and carbon neutral certified products. This carbon neutral certification means they have measured and compensated the carbon emissions of every step in their supply chain – from the harvest of the raw product, to the packaging, and all the way to your kitchen table. They offset the emissions linked to their products by planting trees in the Amazon forest through a reforestation program called Pur Projet. Moreover, over 25% of the energy Alter Eco uses comes form renewable sources.

Alter Eco sets a great example of how global businesses can be run without damaging our planet!
